Halperin, David  “Guidelines for psychiatric hospitalization of ex-cultists.”  in Langone, Michael D [ed.];   Recovery from cults: Help for victims of psychological and spiritual abuse. pp. 263-274;  (1995) W.W. Norton,  NY, NY.
SUMMARY: This chapter describes cases that illustrate the types of problems encountered by psychiatric hospitals treating cultists. Three broad categories of patients deserve examination: individuals who prior to cult affiliation appeared to be without significant mental illness; individuals who prior to cult affiliation evidenced significant psychopathology; and individuals who ascribe to satanism. Cult affiliation may significantly exacerbate the individual's difficulties in adaptation, whatever overt symptoms of preexisting psychopathology are present. Thus, in considering guidelines for the inpatient treatment of cult members, the relationship of the cult member to his or her family, ego strength prior to affiliation, and community resources available to the individual upon discharge need to be considered for meaningful aftercare planning. Guidelines can be best formulated and issues considered in the context provided by the examination of specific cases within the three categories outlined above. [Adapted from Text, p. 264]

Hedges, Lawrence E. (1994) Remembering, repeating, and working through childhood trauma: The psychodynamics of recovered memories, multiple personality, ritual abuse, incest, molest, and abduction. J. Aronson, Northvale, NJ.
TABLE OF CONTENTS: Part I: Taking recovered memories seriously -- Varieties of remembering and forgetting -- Transference and resistance memories -- The fear of breakdown, emptiness, and death -- Part II: Multiple personality reconsidered -- Background and history of multiplicity -- Understanding and working with multiples -- Part III: The dual relationship in psychotherapy -- The problem of duality -- In praise of the dual relationship -- Duality as essential to psychological cure -- Part IV: Psychotic anxieties and the organizing experience -- The organizing transference -- Working through the organizing transference -- The development of a transference psychosis: Sandy -- Countertransference to the organizing experience -- Therapists at risk.
SUMMARY: This book discusses what is vital to understand the psychodynamic roots of remembered (childhood) abuse. Drawing on a century of psychoanalytic study of memory and the way it operates in therapy, Hedges clarifies the misunderstandings and misinformation that currently exist in the media and popular press regarding memory and the nature of the psychotherapeutic process. Hedges reviews the many ways in which our memories play tricks on us. He shows how the therapist who is uninformed about the power of transference is likely to collude with the patient's resistance to transference remembering and thus help the person externalize blame for the experienced trauma onto persons outside the therapeutic relationship and in the distant past.

SUMMARY:(from the preface) When you want to know about violent crime, why not go to the violent offenders? I talked and corresponded with violent personal offenders, rapists, and murderers. I asked them questions about their crimes, motivations, and crime scenes. I combined the knowledge I gained from those in prison and on death row with theoretical knowledge and my practical experience. This book is a product of that endeavor and provides the basic elements of profiling. It is not a cook book. In other words, it will not turn anyone into a profiler. What it will do is acquaint readers with the general principles of profiling, as well as what is needed to develop a sociopsychological profile. I believe that experience, a thorough knowledge of the social and behavioral sciences (as well as criminology), and a knowledge of police investigative techniques will serve as a firm base for profiling.

Hunt, Linda. (1991) Secret agenda: The United States government, nazi scientists, and Project Paperclip, 1945 to 1990. St. Martin's Press, NY, NY.
NOTE: Well-documented. Also contains many pages of research notes and other information that helps the reader find more information about a little-known part of our country's history. For decades, U.S. federal agencies allegedly illegally smuggled thousands of ardent Nazi criminals into our country, whitewashed their dossiers, and placed many of them in high-security positions with corporations, universities, Department of Defense contractors, NASA, and more. Some Nazis with medical knowledge gained from their concentration camp experiences allegedly taught MKULTRA personnel how to duplicate such experiments using the minds and bodies of unwitting American citizens. Many survivors of nazi-ideologic ritual abuse and/or U.S. and Canadian government mind-control experiments can probably find some of their answers to "who" and "why" in Linda Hunt's book.

Hunter, M. (ed.) (1995) Child survivors and perpetrators of sexual abuse: Treatment innovations. Sage Pub., Thousand Oaks, CA.
NOTE: The first chapter discusses the facilitation of emotional regulation and impulse control in children who have been sexually abused and provides clinicians with practical treatment recommendations. Another chapter describes the specialized treatment of adolescent survivors of abuse within the hospital setting and provides criteria for determining when inpatient treatment is appropriate. The final chapter in this section deals with ritual abuse, a controversial and emotionally charged topic. The most controversial topic within the field of sexual abuse is whether to define sexually aggressive children as victims or perpetrators. The definition chosen depends on the type of treatment provided. The chapters here present a cultural background for addressing this issue, a model for identifying sexually aggressive children, a treatment model for working with such youngsters that allow young offenders to assume responsibility for their emotions and behaviors without assuming the shame of a negative label, and a treatment model for working with the parents of these children.

SUMMARY: Forensic evaluation assesses the functioning and clinical mental health needs of children by seeking to understand their experiences, but also tries specifically to generate evidence that may be used in legal actions The variation in clinical presentation and legal issues involved in cases of suspected or known ritualized maltreatment prevent reliance upon a single protocol or "recipe" for forensic evaluation. Presents general considerations and strategies for evaluation in cases where children or adolescents present for forensic evaluation as victims or perpetrators of ritualized maltreatment. Ritualized maltreatment and the law; overview of forensic mental health; child forensic evaluation (eliciting information from children, specific investigative techniques, the role of the forensic evaluator); use of law-enforcement information; forensic evaluation and ritualized maltreatment (degree and nature of any group involvement, motivations for ritualized maltreatment, intrafamilial or extrafamilial perpetrators, sources of "contagion" or external agendas, clinical sequelae of ritualized maltreatment); forensic evaluation of delinquency and occult involvement.

This casebook offers step-by-step treatment guidelines for a number of childhood difficulties, including internalizing, externalizing, and post-traumatic disorders. It should be of interest to both students and more advanced practitioners in a variety of mental health disciplines, including social work; psychiatry; clinical, counseling, and school psychology; expressive arts therapy; child-life therapy; and psychiatric nursing.

It draws on the clinical expertise of treatment professionals and the personal experiences of those formerly involved in high-intensity mind-control groups. The book examines the history of the cult phenomenon, the nature of mind control, the psychological literature on post-cult distress, why people leave cults, exit counseling and deprogramming, and how to facilitate recovery. (It) makes a strong case for the extreme damage that cults can do to members physically, as well as psychologically and spiritually. There are specific guidelines for different types of counseling: psychotherapy, pastoral counseling, psychiatric hospitalization, and suggestions for support groups, families and ex-members themselves.

SUMMARY:  Adolfo de Jess Constanzo, a 26-year-old Cuban-American bisexual cult leader and male model, managed a drug smuggling ring in Matamoros, Mexico. He and Sara Villarreal Aldrete, his 24-year-old girlfriend and high priestess of the drug cult, were successful in the drug trade because of their proven-effective practice of torturing and ritually sacrificing their competition. Through human sacrifice ceremonies, Constanzo preached that his followers would be invisible to their enemies. They abducted Mark Kilroy, an American college student on Spring break, and killed him at their border ranch known as "Rancho Santa Elena." A police search on both sides of the Texas border led to Rancho Santa Elena location, a bare 6 miles from the Rio Grande and the American border and Mark Kilroy’s mutilated body. The dismembered bodies of fourteen other men and boys were recovered.
