The Midnight Sky

...for Amou

Twilight descends once again on the valley, the ephemeral clouds blazing in multi-hued splendor as the sun descends... and the soft evening winds bring scents of pines, meadows, and the distant sea...

Far off in the valley, a large and grizzled grey wolf pauses for a moment as he crosses a stream, and his blue-grey eyes watch the sky intently as the colors deepen, the clouds fade, and the first stars appear... and a subtle shudder ripples through his form as he smiles deeply and turns towards the majestic cloud-wreathed Mountain towering over the valley...

Quietly and with confident stride, the Wolf passes through a meadow, a silent shadow unseen but for a sparkling SoulGem who smiles softly and deeply, knowing whence the Wolf journeys... and he smiles in return, eyes glowing, his smile deepening... and melts into the forest...

Here and there, some note his passing, and wonder... knowing, sensing somehow that the wolf they knew is gone... Seeing that where once ran to and fro a frantic wolf trying so hard to help all in pain, there now strides a confident and powerful grizzled grey Wolf... and the Wolf smiles softly, sensing their confusion... some, fearing the change, run into the darkness crying ``wolf, wolf''... and others, sensing the peace within the grey one smile softly as he passes by... and yet others see nothing more than the familiar Lupine form...

The Wolf smiles inwardly, and continues towards the mountain as the last light fades in the west, setting the clouds ablaze in beauty echoing the wondrous light in his heart and soul...

Then... as the last light of the sun gives way to the myriad stars, the Wolf crosses onto the foothills of the Mountain.. and he stops, looking up the forested slopes silhouetted against the softly shimmering stars, a song beyond words leaping within his soul... and the scintillating stars are mirrored in his eyes as they seek - and unerringly find - a ledge far up the mountain... Swiftly, sure of foot, the large Wolf ascends, leaping over fallen logs and small streams, springing from one boulder to the next, climbing ever higher as the night deepens... through forests and meadows blanketing the Mountain, the Wolf climbs rapidly, his ghostly form illuminated by the soft light of myriad stars...

Then... he emerges from a forest far up the mountain onto the ledge, and looks into the stars, and lifts his head to the Midnight Skies and voices his Soul and very being in the SoulSong of Love for his LifeMate... And The Lioness answers, her wondrous rumbling purr sounding strong and regal from the other end of the Ledge, her eyes softly and lovingly aglow as she in turn smiles at the Wolf and voices her SoulSong of Love with his... Her voice lifted with His in wondrous celebration of their Love...

Wolven eyes peer deeply into Feline eyes as they in turn peer deeply into his... and the Wolf and Lioness quietly and powerfully meet in the middle of the ledge, turning to walk side by side, soul to soul, heart to heart, mind to mind into the meadow as the aurora borealis shimmers across the Midnight Sky, a celestial rainbow...
